  9. Three primary tasks were discussed as objectives for the working group:
  10.

  12.   1. A specification for LPR will be published as an RFC and submitted
  13.      for inclusion in the standards track.  There was a divergent set of
  14.      opinions as to what status we should suggest for LPR.
  15.   2. A common, full featured network printing protocol was seen as a
  16.      good, long term goal for the Internet.  Paladium, the Project
  17.      Athena printing protocol, was suggested.  Copies of the
  18.      specification will be made available electronically as soon as
  19.      possible.  We are looking for comments on the Paladium protocol as
  20.      well as other suitable printing protocols to be presented in
  21.      Pittsburg.
  22.   3. If this long term network printing protocol proves to be unsuitable
  23.      for use in resource limited environments, an interim protocol
  24.      (possibly based on LPR) may be necessary.  For example, requiring
  25.      an RPC mechanism was viewed as unacceptable for most terminal
  26.      server or PC DOS environments.  Further information on this topic
  27.      is again expected to be presented in Pittsburg.

  29. A number of other topics, including security issues and a single
  30. 'network' PostScript definition, were discussed and judged to be within
  31. the purview of other working groups or committees.  We will follow these
  32. discussions to present our ideas and concerns.

  36. The mailing list of this working group is print-wg@pluto.dss.com.  We
  37. will be meeting in Pittsburg.  A proposed charter will soon be presented
  38. for review.
